My artwork looks at themes of belonging and isolation.
I am constantly fascinated with how much our environment can affect us; my work looks at the power of landscape, and how vastness can feel lonely but can also offer comfort, but also how important the idea of "home" is, and the sense of space that comes with the places we feel rooted in. A lot of my practice is based on sense of space, that feeling of belonging that we do or don’t feel in certain places. In particular, I look at home and the comfort it brings us, and whether that is tied to a building, a particular landscape, or a person.
One of the most important parts of my process is using my sketchbook. I have developed a practise of taking my sketchbook on daily walks; drawing from life allows me to experiment freely with colour, tone, and composition, and makes me look more closely at the landscape that we see everyday. In future work, I aim to work more collaboratively and with local communities: with my experiences during my artist residency at Courtyard Arts and at university, I've learnt that the work I find most rewarding involves learning from others, whether artists or not.
